Faculty of Medicine

Goals and Fields of Action

In its Strategy 2030, the Faculty of Medicine has adopted «Digital Medicine» as a long-term strategic goal (time frame >5 years) with the following strategic objective:

The Faculty of Medicine wants to further develop digitalization in medicine (clinical, teaching, research) in selected fields of action, such as solving the problems of data exchange, data interoperability, and the coordination of activities of different stakeholders, such as the University of Bern, Insel Gruppe AG, and UPD, taking into account identified priorities. For this goal, the digitalization strategy of the Faculty of Medicine was aligned with the digitalization strategy of the University of Bern.

Fields of Action:

  1. The establishment of a «digital hub» in the Insel Gruppe/UPD - Medical Faculty - University of Bern axis and within the Medical Faculty.
  2. The preparation of digital infrastructure and data-related interoperability involving the Insel Gruppe/UPD - Faculty of Medicine - University of Bern axis is to be developed and expanded. Interfaculty solutions and the expertise of other faculties are to be included.
  3. The academization of digital medicine, data science, and artificial intelligence in services and research represent a qualitatively new form of use of large amounts of data from multiple sources, which must be expanded in a targeted manner. In this context, reducing the complexity of data-related processes and open data exchange at national and international levels is of great importance.
  4. The targeted and standardized digitalization of operational processes must be driven forward, considering the cost-benefit ratio.
  5. Digitalization in medicine as educational content is to be included in basic training and in the medical curriculum for specific subjects. Structural innovation in learning environments and modernization is to be implemented for a competitive, modern study of human medicine. Measures to be implemented are to be coordinated with the faculty's strategic goals on the subject of teaching.
